Well.....what was originally forecast to be 29.5 hours ended up becoming 31.5 hours with a few delays thrown in.....and yes those extra 2 hours felt like 20 hours!!! Qantas really was the way to fly - no complaints from us, and being able use the Qantas lounges was great. We had a smooth transition through customs and imigration at LA and then an even easier exit at JFK in NY. 8/16/09 - 8 days prior to start. All hotel reservations are confirmed with exception of possible 9/2 stay someplace on the way back to south Jersey. Biltmore Estate tickets also reserved for Day 5, but Monticello, Dixie Stampede, Cherokee and caves are weather dependent at this time. As we had chosen an Emirates flight, we had a 10-hour stopover at Dubai. It would be highly impossible for us to join a city or desert tour given the short stopover, hence we decided to explore the city on our own. We reached Dubai International Airport early in the morning (4am)but the sun was already rising as if it is 7am back in Singapore! Having been traveling since yesterday afternoon (Pacific time), it nearly killed us to miss our extra tight connection from Paris-CGD to Zagreb by seconds. Very frustrating to see them close the door in our face. We knew it was tight but figured AirFrance wouldn't have booked it if it wasn't possible. We arrived early morning in Chicago. Checked in Westin Rivernorth, service was good and it is right by the Chicago river, next to Marina towers (corn cob) and Trump towers. The St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park opened on May 20, 1893. Not only does it have over 20 species of crocodilians, but also a variety of other reptiles, mammals and birds. Lots of birds! It is more like a zoo than a farm with exhibits, animal performances and educational demonstrations. It is a great place for young and old alike! Day 1 We start this vacation from our home in Gruver, Ia. We have three small children Charles (8) Brooklyn (2) and Alyssa (6months). We tried to make this trip economical and packed 2 coolers, one with drinks and the other with food for picnics. As it took us some time to organize the van and get 3 small kids situated we left much later than expected and took off for our vacation at 12:00 pm.
